Welcome to Herbal Apothecary
Originally established in the 1980s, Herbal Apothecary has been providing high quality herbal products to practitioners, the trade and the public for over 30 years.
Commitment is in our roots
Herbal Apothecary has been in existence for over 30 years and we produce one of the largest ranges of practitioner herbal products in the UK. Many of the products developed with practitioners are now available to trade customers and the wider public. We are proud of the fact that we are a family run business wholly committed to the principals of natural medicine.
The Fearnley family has been involved with the company since the late 1990s when James Fearnley became a Director. At that time Hugo and Cecily Fearnley used to work in the company during school holidays, earning extra pocket money by bottling tinctures. In 2005 the company was incorporated into Nature’s Laboratory Ltd and moved to its new home on the edge of Whitby, in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park.
Shortly after the move we created a purpose built modern manufacturing site, which was officially opened in 2008 by long time champion of plant medicine, David Bellamy OBE. Since then we have worked hard to expand our range and continually improve our quality and service, whilst remaining competitively priced. Our ethos is driven by our 3 guiding principles of Evidence, Sustainability and Access.
Reuniting Science and Nature through rigorous targeted research.
At Herbal Apothecary we seek to produce natural medicines of the highest quality. We manufacture under ISO9001:2015 and Organic certification and according to HACCP and GMP principles. We are supported in our work by highly qualified scientific personnel.
Nature’s Laboratory is supported by a Scientific Advisory Board composed of top academics in both plant and bee related fields. The group is chaired by Professor Sir Kenneth Stuart (Ex Chief Medical Advisor for the Commonwealth) and includes Professor Peter Houghton, Professor Philip Calder and Professor Anant Paradkar.
Academic partners over the last 15 years have included:
- Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences
- University of Bradford, Centre for Pharmaceutical Engineering Science
- Biorenewables Development Centre
- University of York
- Leeds Beckett University
- University of Oxford
- University of Birmingham
- University of East London
Together with our academic partners we have published numerous peer reviewed research papers.
Our new laboratory is fully equipped with a brand new HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) system and managed by a fully trained Research Chemist under the Knowledge Transfer Partnership scheme. This programme is supported by the University of Bradford, Centre for Pharmaceutical Engineering Science. We are now able to carry out both routine in-process analysis as well as specific research work into plant materials and bee products. Our quality and research work is supervised by Professor Anant Paradkar, Director of the Centre for Pharmaceutical Engineering Science.
Creating socially and ecologically sustainable products and processes.
We believe that truly sustainable businesses must consider all aspects of their operating processes and strive to create long lasting benefits for customers, employees, the community and the wider environment.
With this philosophy at our core, we make every effort to ensure our raw materials are from sustainable sources and that the products we make are of the highest quality. We aim to keep our prices fair and affordable, working with a business model that allows us to reinvest in research, development and crucially our workforce. As an accredited Real Living Wage Employer, we believe that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay, which means we will always pay our staff a wage significantly higher than the National Minimum Wage. We ensure all materials that can be recycled don’t end up in landfill and have a policy to use paper only when absolutely necessary. Our loosefill packaging chips which are used in each dispatch box are made from corn starch and are completely compostable and biodegradable. We are proud of the fact that our electricity, which powers all of our manufacturing, dispatch and admin processes is from 100% renewable sources.
Creating connections between practitioners and consumers, through products and services.
We believe that natural medicine will have a huge part to play in the healthcare of the 21st Century. We are committed to ensuring the long term viability and availability of herbal medicine, to ensure as many people as possible can benefit from the potentially life changing treatments this tradition has to offer.
We work closely with highly respected industry bodies such as the British Herbal Medicine Association (BHMA), National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH) and the European Herbal and Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association (EHTPA), to ensure we are up to date with all the relevant issues affecting the sector. Our goal is to push forward the evidence base for natural medicines and prove to regulators and the wider public that high quality herbal products, when prescribed and administered correctly, can be hugely beneficial for a broad range of ailments from minor complaints to chronic conditions.
