Product Description

Celery (Apium graveolens) is a marshland plant in the family Apiaceae that has been cultivated as a vegetable since antiquity. Celery has a long fibrous stalk tapering into leaves. Depending on location and cultivar, either its stalks, leaves, or hypocotyl are eaten and used in cooking, extracts and herbal medicine. Celery is a widely cultivated, biennial plant which agrows wild in salty soils of North and South America, Europe, and Africa.

In temperate countries, celery is also grown for its seeds. Actually very small fruit, these "seeds" yield a valuable volatile oil used in the perfume and pharmaceutical industries. They contain an organic compound called apiole.

Medicinal Action and Uses

Calminative - it has a mild sedative or tranquilizing effect.

Carminative - is used for easing griping pains, colic and expelling gas from the intestines.

Circulatory - The celery seeds are useful in arthritis, helping to detoxify the body and improve the circulation of blood to the muscles and joints.

Cleansing - The seeds are used for treating rheumatic conditions and gout. They help the kidneys dispose of urates and other unwanted waste products, as well as working to reduce acidity in the body as a whole.

Diuretic - Celery seeds have a mildly diuretic and significantly antiseptic action. They are an effective treatment for cystitis, helping to disinfect the bladder and urinary tubules.
