Botanical Name - Coptis chinensis

Chinese Name - HUANG LIAN

English Name - Coptis Root

Tincture made by a process of hydro-ethanolic percolation, with a ratio of 1 part Coptis Root to 3 parts liquid. Liquid comprises of 75% water and 25% sugar beet derived ethanol.

Coptis chinensis,also known as coptis root or the Chinese goldthread, is a species of goldthread flowering plant native to China. It is a low-growing, creeping, perennial plant that is endemic to the cooler regions of Asia, most notably China. It can be found in damp coniferous woods and bogs. Forests, shaded places in valleys at elevations of 500 - 2000 metres.

Coptis chinensis is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is called Huang Lian. The root contains berberine, a bright yellow pigment found in the roots, which can be used for dyeing.

 

Medicinal Action and Uses

Antibacterial - Coptis chinensis can be useful and is said to be of great use to those suffering from canker sores, toothaches, swollen gums, and sore throat. This is due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Gastrointestinal - Coptis root is a popular herb to treat gastrointestinal complaints. As an anti-diarrheal and stomachic agent with pain relieving and anti-inflammatory qualities, it facilitates the digestive process and ensures that it continues smoothly. Due to this, it can greatly reduce the risk of developing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), dysentery, diarrhoea, and painful bowel movements.

Ophthalmic - Coptis can be used as an eyewash to treat conjunctivitis.

Topical uses - Coptis chinensis poultices and compresses have been shown to be effective in remedying skin conditions like acne, boils, abscesses, and even burns. Moreover, the tannins have been shown to encourage quicker wound healing and curb blood flow, making it just as efficient in treating hemorrhages.

Vascular - Coptis chinensis can act as a preventive measure against such heart conditions as atherosclerosis.
