Ocimum tenuiflorum, commonly known as holy basil or tulsi, is an aromatic perennial plant in the family Lamiaceae.

It is native to the Indian subcontinent and widespread as a cultivated plant throughout the Southeast Asian tropics.

Tulasi is cultivated for religious and traditional medicine purposes, and for its essential oil. It is widely used as a herbal tea, commonly used in Ayurveda, and has a place within the Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism, in which devotees perform worship involving holy basil plants or leaves.

Medicinal Action and Uses

Adaptogen - Holy Basil is an excellent example of an adaptogen herb that can help relieve the stress of modern living. Adaptogenic herbs act to bring the body back in balance, increasing the body's resistance to stress and adversity

Antipyretic - Fever is mainly caused due to infections from protozoa (malaria), bacteria (typhoid), viruses (flu), and even allergic substances and fungus. Holy basil is an excellent antibiotic, germicidal, fungicidal, and disinfectant agent and very effectively protects our body from all sorts of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. These properties of tulsi destroy all those pathogens and heal the resulting fever.

Anti-ulcerative - Holy Basil is similar to green tea in its anti-tumor and anti-ulcerative properties.

Respiratory - Traditionally, tulsi has been used to treat coughs, mild upper respiratory infections and bronchospasms, as well as bronchial asthma when combined with ginger and black pepper.

Topical Uses - Tulsi is often used externally to treat inflammation and skin disorders, and it may be useful in resolving dermatitis from poison oak and poison ivy. It cures skin disorders both internally and externally, without any side effects. This property mainly comes from its essential oils, which are highly antibiotic, disinfectant, antibacterial, and antifungal in nature.
