Product Description

Commiphora myrrha, called myrrh, African myrrh, herabol myrrh, Somali myrrhor, common myrrh,  or gum myrrh is a tree in the Burseraceae family. It is one of the primary trees used in the production of myrrh, a resin made from dried tree sap.

The tree is native to the Arabian peninsula (Oman, Yemen) and to Africa (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, Northeast Kenya). It does best in thin soil, primarily in areas with limestone.

It is the bitter tasting rubber sap that is used as herbal medicine. The sap secretes naturally from the bark of the tree and becomes a resin (Myrrh) when it solidifies.

Medicinal Action and Uses

Anti-inflammatory - use of powdered myrrh as a treatment for mild inflammations of the mouth and throat due to myrrh’s tannin content. It is also good at healing skin conditions like eczema and wounds, especially chronic wounds, as it has excellent bactericidal and anti-inflammatory effects.

Antimicrobial - Myrrh is thought to stimulate the production of white blood cells, making it a possible treatment of conditions where an antimicrobial agent is needed.

Antiseptic - Externally it is healing to the skin and an antiseptic for wounds and abrasions.

Antispasmodic -  Myrrh is used as a treatment for abdominal and intestinal pain.

Expectorant - The steam inhalation can reduce excessive mucus, which is suitable for the treatment of chest infections, nose and throat catarrh, chronic bronchitis, colds, and sore throats.

Mucosal stimulant - It has therefore long been a treatment for colds.
