Description
Botanical Name – Anemarrhena asphodeloides
Chinese Name – ZHI MU
English Name – Common Anemarrhena Root
Tincture made by a process of hydro-ethanolic percolation, with a ratio of 1 part Common Anemarrhena Root to 3 parts liquid. Liquid comprises of 75% water and 25% sugar beet derived ethanol.
Anemarrhena is a plant genus in family Asparagaceae, subfamily Agavoideae. It has only one species, Anemarrhena asphodeloides. It is an evergreen Perennial growing to 0.5 m by 1 m. It is in flower from August to September.
It is native to China, Korea, and Mongolia but grows throughout Eastern Asia , Northern China and Japan.
It prefers Mountain woodlands, exposed slopes and hills, Scrubland, grassy slopes, steppes, sunny and sandy hillsides from near sea level to 1500 metres.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Antibacterial – It has an antibacterial action, inhibiting the growth of Bacillus dysenteriae, B. typhi, B. paratyphi, Proteus and Pseudomonas.
Diuretic – The plant has diuretic properties and can be used to treat urinary problems.
Expectorant – It has been used in the treatment of chronic bronchitis.
Febrifuge – It is taken internally in the treatment of high fevers in infectious diseases.
Laxative – The herb has laxative effects and should therefore not be given to patients with diarrhoea.
