English Name – Large Trifolious Bugbane Root
Cimicifuga (bugbane or cohosh) is a genus of between 12-18 species of flowering plants belonging to the family Ranunculaceae.
It is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, growing most commonly in E. Asia – C. Russia to Japan.
Cimicifuga foetida is a Perennial growing to 1.5 m by 0.6 m. It grows in Shrubberies and forest clearings on open humus-rich soils.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Anti-bacterial – As the root has antibacterial, antiviral, diaphoretic and pain relieveing qualities, it can be used in the treatment of coughs, colds, headaches, gum diseases and feverish infections such as measles
Anti-infective- bugbane is an anti-infective herb that lowers fevers and reduces pain and has antiviral properties.
Detoxifying – Cimicifuga foetida is generally matched with Shi Gao (Gypsum) and Huang Lian (Coptis Root) to cure gum infection, mouth sores and sore throat that are caused by hyperactivity of the stomach.
