English Name – Japanese Teasel Root
Dipsacus is a genus of flowering plant in the family Caprifoliaceae. The members of this genus are known as teasel, teazel or teazle. The genus includes about 15 species of tall herbaceous biennial plants (rarely short-lived perennial plants) growing to 1–2.5 metres tall.
Teasels are easily identified with their prickly stem and leaves, and the inflorescence of purple, dark pink or lavender flowers that form a head on the end of the stem(s).
The plant is Native to East Asia, in particular China and Japan.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Analgesic – Japanese teasel root can be used to treat pain in the lion and knees, and is used to cure weakness of muscles and bones due to rheumatism.
Antirheumatic- One of the plants main uses is to treat rheumatic pain and arthritis.
Astringent – Dipsacus is a bitter astringent which possesses stomach soothing properties and improves digestion.
Hepatic – Dipsacus is a detox agent for the Liver and Kidneys. When taken with other herbs such as Rehmannia or Eucommia, it helps to tonify the Kidneys and strengthen the bones.
