Epimedium, also known as barrenwort, bishop’s hat, fairy wings, horny goat weed, or yin yang huo, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Berberidaceae. The majority of the species are endemic to China, with smaller numbers elsewhere in Asia, and a few in the Mediterranean region.
Epimedium species are deciduous or evergreen hardy perennials. The majority have four-parted “spider-like” flowers in spring.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Antirheumatic – Horny Goat Weed is used for used for weak back and knees, joint pain and arthritis.
Aphrodisiac – Horny Goat Weed is widely known as an aid to erectile disfunction. It is also used for sexual performance problems, involuntary and premature ejaculation and for low sexual desire.
Expectorant – The herb is taken internally in the treatment of asthma, bronchitis and colds.
