English Name – Frittilaria Root
Fritillaria thunbergii is an Asian plant species of the Liliaceae or lily family. It is native to Kazakhstan and in the Xinjiang Province of western China, though now cultivated in other places and naturalised in Japan and in other parts of China.
The plant thrives in Bamboo forests, shady and moist places from near sea level to 600 metres.
This remedy should only be used under the supervision of a qualified practitioner, excessive doses can cause breathing difficulties and heart failure.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Antidote – Frittilaria contains fritimine which diminishes excitability of respiratory centres, paralyses voluntary movement and counters effects of opium.
Antitussive – The plant is used in the treatment of coughs, bronchitis, pneumonia due to its antitussive (cough relieving) and expectorant qualities.
Astringent – The bulbs are thought to act specifically on tumours and swellings of the throat, neck and chest, and they are taken in the treatment of thyroid gland nodules, scrofula, abscesses and boils.
