Lavendula officinalis / Lavender Flowers Cut
£6.25 – £17.00
Lavendula officinalis, commonly known as lavender, true lavender, English lavender, garden lavender, common lavender or narrow-leaved lavender is a flowering plant in the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean.
It is a strongly aromatic shrub growing as high as 1 to 2 metres. English lavender is commonly grown as an ornamental plant. It is popular for its colourful flowers, its fragrance, and its ability to survive with low water consumption. It does not grow well in continuously damp soil and may benefit from increased drainage provided by inorganic mulches such as gravel. It does best in Mediterranean climates similar to its native habitat, characterised by wet winters and dry summers. It is fairly tolerant of low temperatures and is generally considered hardy.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Analgesic – Lavender combines well with the analgesic power of rosemary to relieve all types of pain: arthritis, sore muscles, and nerve pain.
Antifungal – This medicinal herb is used topically to treat fungal infections, wounds, eczema, varicose ulcers, sunburned skin and acne.
Anti-spasmodic – Its anti-spasmodic effect may relieve menstrual cramps and it could be useful in relieving headaches and exhaustion as well as improving mood.
Calming – There is evidence that Lavender may slow the activity of the nervous system and therefore promote relaxation, improve sleep quality and bring about emotional balance. This has made it a valuable herbal remedy for the treatment of insomnia.
Stomachic – It may soothe muscle spasms and ease colic, relieve abdominal distension, persistent flatulence, spells of nausea, diarrhea and indigestion. It is also believed to boost flagging appetites.
