Lycium barbarum, commonly called Chinese wolfberry, Chinese boxthorn, Himalayan goji, Tibetan goji, or matrimony vine, is a tree native to southeastern Europe and Asia. It is one of two species of boxthorn in the family Solanaceae from which the goji berry or wolfberry is harvested, the other being Lycium chinense. 

Lycium barbarum is a deciduous woody perennial plant, growing 1–3 m high. The tree is an important commercial crop in northern China, especially in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.  


Medicinal Action and Uses 

Anti-Cancer – The High levels of antioxidants, including vitamin C, zeaxanthin, and carotenoids found in the berries are responsible for fighting cancer cells. Antioxidants slow tumour growth, reduce inflammation, and help to remove harmful substances from the body. 

Anti-Diabetic  The Goji Berry can help to reduce blood glucose and help protect against type 2 diabetes. 

Immunostimulant – Goji berries contain healthy antioxidants. Antioxidants are known for their immune-boosting qualities and their ability to fight harmful free radicals and inflammation. The berries are also high in vitamins A and C, which are vital for building immunity and preventing illnesses. 

Ophthalmic – Wolfberries are high in antioxidant like zeaxanthin, which can help against age-related eye diseases. They can help stop damage from UV light, free radicals and oxidative stress. 

Topical Uses – The beta-carotene found in the berries is known for its ability to promote healthy skin. It can therefore be found in skin creams.
