Menyanthes is a monotypic genus of flowering plants in the family Menyanthaceae containing the single species Menyanthes trifoliata. The North American form is often referred to as M. trifoliata var. minor Michx. It is known in English by the common names bogbean and buckbean.
Menyanthes trifoliata occurs in fens and bogs in Asia, Europe, and North America. In eastern North America, it is considered to be a diagnostic fen species.
It has a characteristic strong and bitter taste, which can be used in schnapps.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Bitter – This strongly bitter herb has been utilised for a long time as a folk medicine. It has been used traditionally for irregular menstruation, to strengthen appetite, increase the secretion of digestive fluids, indigestion, and enhance nutrient absorption.
Febrifuge – Bogbean has been used to treat a dry cough and fever.
Skin Complaints – It has been used as an external remedy for wounds, for skin rashes, inflammation, itch, eczema and edema.
