English Name – Phellodendron Bark
Phellodendron amurense is a species of tree in the family Rutaceae, commonly called the Amur cork tree. It is a major source of huáng bò, one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine. The Ainu people used this plant, called shikerebe-ni, as a painkiller.
It is native to eastern Asia: northern China, northeast China, Korea, Ussuri, Amur, and Japan, the Amur cork tree is considered invasive in many parts of North America.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Antibacterial – Phellodendron amurense has a strong antibacterial effect and has been used internally to treat diarrhea, dysentery, enteritis, vaginal infections, acute urinary tract infections, abscesses, tumors, jaundice, night sweats and skin diseases.
Depurative – Phellodendron amurense is a strongly bitter remedy, the bark acts strongly on the kidneys and is regarded as a detoxicant for hot damp conditions.
Diuretic – Phellodendron Bark is best known as diuretic and cooling herb that stimulates the liver and gallbladder.
External Uses – Its antibacterial qualities have seen it used for certain types of eczema. Studies have also shown its success in treating conjunctivitis in children.
