Prunella vulgaris commonly known as self-heal, heal-all, woundwort, heart-of-the-earth, carpenter’s herb, brownwort and blue curls, is a herbaceous plant in the genus Prunella.
Prunella vulgaris grows 5 to 30 cm high, with creeping, self-rooting, tough, square, reddish stems branching at leaf axis. It grows on Roadsides, gardens and waste-places, Woodland edges, and usually in basic and neutral soils.
It can be found throughout Europe, Asia and North America, as well as most temperate climates. In Ireland it is generally abundant.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Anti-Inflammatory – It is used as an anti-inflammatory and has anti-allergic activity.
External Uses – In western medicine it is used externally for treating minor injuries, sores, burns, bruises and can also be used as a mouthwash to treat mouth ulcers.
Hepatic – in Chinese medicine the herb is mainly used for treating liver complaints, acting as a stimulant in the liver and gall bladder.
Styptic – The plant has a long history of medicinal use, and traditionally the leaves are applied to wounds to promote healing and staunch bleeding.
