Kudzu (also called Japanese arrowroot) is a group of plants in the genus Pueraria, in the pea family Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae.

They are climbing, coiling, and trailing perennial vines native to much of eastern Asia, Southeast Asia, and some Pacific islands.

Where these plants are naturalised, they can be invasive and are considered noxious weeds. The plant climbs over trees or shrubs and grows so rapidly that it kills them by heavy shading. Kudzu has been used as a form of erosion control as well as to enhance the soil. As a legume, it increases the nitrogen in the soil

Medicinal Action and Uses

Alcoholism – Chinese doctors have used kudzu for centuries in a tea form as a treatment for alcoholism. It is said to be effective in controlling and suppressing the urge to drink alcohol, without side effects.

Circulatory – Kudzu is often used as a remedy for heart and circulatory problems and high blood pressure. Flavonoid-like substances in kudzu contribute to an increase in blood circulation and flow in the arteries of the heart

Gastrointestinal – The fibre in kuzu, in combination with the anti-inflammatory effects of umeboshi, are helpful in easing the symptoms of acute diverticulitis and irritable bowel syndrome.
