Salvia miltiorrhiza, also known as red sage, Chinese sage, or dan shen, is a perennial plant in the genus Salvia, highly valued for its roots in traditional Chinese medicine.
It grows at 90 to 1,200 m elevation, preferring grassy places in forests, hillsides, and along stream banks. It is native to China and Japan.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Antihypertensive – Red Root Sage can dilate blood vessels and lowers blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Cordial – It expands coronary arteries, increases coronary blood flow, improves myocardial ischemia. It also improves microcirculation and promotes blood flow.
Hepatic – It can protect the liver cells from damage and promotes the regeneration of liver cell, and resists the liver fibrosis.
Skin Complaints – Some people use Red Root sage for skin conditions including acne, psoriasis, and eczema. This is due to its ability to fight inflammation and allergies
