Description
Scrophularia ningpoensis is commonly known as the Ningpo figwort or Chinese figwort, and is a perennial plant of the family Scrophulariaceae. The genus Scrophularia consists of about 300 species, many of which have been used for medical care in folk medicine since ancient times. Scrophularia nipogensis grows in tropical climate, generally up to the height of 1metre.
Its dried roots are known in China as Xuanshen, a traditional medicine that has been used as an antipyretic and for the treatment of sore throat and prurigo for over 1000 years. The use of S.ningpoensis in Chinese medicine dates back to the later Han dynasty (AD25-220). Scrophularia nipogensis has been used in China for centuries as a herbal tea to treat various diseases.
