Scutellaria baicalensis, with the common name Baikal skullcap, is a species of flowering plant in the Lamiaceae family. Other names include Huang qin, baikal, baical skullcap root, scute, scutellaria (Not to be confused with Scutellaria lateriflora.)
The plant is native to China, Korea, Mongolia, and Russia in the Russian Far East and Siberia. The plant grows well in sandy, rocky soils and needs full sun. It prefers dry soils and does well in cultivated planting beds.
It is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Antihistamine – The herb hasantihistamine properties that could make it a useful herb for treating asthma and allergies such as hay fever.
Anti-Inflammatory – Chinese skullcap also has shown aspirin-like anti-inflammatory qualities and has also been used for inflammatory skin diseases.
Antioxidant – The herb is a potent antioxidant, which may make it helpful in preventing heart disease and limiting the damage to the heart following a heart attack.
Anti-arthritic – Chinese skullcap has shown anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory properties, making it useful as a herbal arthritis treatment.
