It mainly grows at an altitude of 60–2000 m in sandy soil on sunny sloped land.The plant is natively distributed in East Asia and widely cultivated in European and American countries. China is the main producer of S. baicalensis for medicinal use.

The dry roots of the plant are often used as medicine. The chemical components of S. baicalensis roots are mainly flavonoids, anthraquinones, lignin, organic acids, volatile oils, and other compounds.
