Description
Solidago gigantea, commonly known as European Golden rod or woundwort is a herbaceous perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. It grows up to 100cm and produces numerous small yellow flower heads at the top of the stems.
It is widespread across most of Europe as well as North Africa and northern, central, and southwestern Asia.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Anti-Allergy – Its astringent property calms runny eyes, runny nose, and sneezing that comes with late summer and early Autumn allergies.
Anti-Inflammatory – Due to its anti-inflammatory effects, it is also used to treat upper respiratory inflammation and congestion.
Antiseptic – Its antiseptic and antimicrobial properties make this a good treatment for sore throats.
Astringent – The astringent and antiseptic qualities of Golden Rod tighten and tone the urinary system and bladder making it useful for treatment of urinary tract infections.
Circulatory –Golden Rod is a good source of the constituent rutin, a powerful flavonoid that benefits the cardiovascular system. Rutin has the ability to support circulation for the cardiovascular system as well as to increase capillary strength.
Expectorant – As an expectorant, goldenrod can expel mucous easily from the lungs.
Skin Complaints – The flowers and the leaves can be infused with oil or used as a poultice for wounds and burns.
