Cloves (Syzygium auranticum) are the aromatic flower buds of a tree in the Myrtaceae family. The evergreen trees are native to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia and can grow to 12 m tall. Cloves are commercially harvested primarily in Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Madagascar, Zanzibar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania.
The clove tree is an evergreen that grows up to 8–12 m tall, with large leaves and crimson flowers grouped in terminal clusters. The flower buds of the clove plant must be picked at the right time in their development in order to be usable.
