SKU: 3152P Category: Tag:

Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) is a perennial, herbaceous flowering plant of the aster family, native to temperate Europe and Asia. It has been introduced to other parts of the world, including North America, and in some areas has become invasive. It is also known as common tansy, bitter buttons, cow bitter, or golden buttons.

The scent is similar to that of camphor with hints of rosemary. The leaves and flowers are toxic if consumed in large quantities.

This hardy, sun-loving plant is resistant to cold and frost and commonly grows in open areas close to water, such as roadsides and ditches.

Medicinal Action and Uses

Abortifacient – Historically, the most common medicinal use of tansy was as an abortifacient. It naturally stimulates blood flow to the pelvis and uterus (emmenagogue) and was used to bring on menstruation or abort an unwanted pregnancy.

Analgesic – Tansy contains compounds similar to Feverfew, and is used to alleviate the pain of migraines, headaches, neuralgia, rheumatism and gout.

Anthelmintic – Tansy is used to treat worms as it contains a volatile oil  which is toxic to internal parasites.

Insect Repellent – Due to the toxic components in the volatile oil, it has a long use as an insect repellent.

Topical Uses – Tansy has been used externally as an herbal remedy for lice, fleas and scabies. This is due to the effects the herb has on parasites and insects.
