Thymus vulgaris (common names include common thyme, German thyme, garden thyme or just thyme) is a species of flowering plant in the mint family Lamiaceae.
Growing to 15–30 cm tall by 40 cm wide, it is a bushy, woody-based evergreen sub-shrub with small, highly aromatic, grey-green leaves and clusters of purple or pink flowers in early summer.
It is native to southern Europe from the western Mediterranean to southern Italy.
It has both culinary and medicinal uses, and the history of thyme as being in use as both a seasoning and a medicinal herb for goes back more than 3000 years.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Antifungal – It has been used as a herbal remedy against fungal infections like athlete’s foot and as a remedy for oral Candida (thrush) and other yeast infections.
Antiseptic – Thyme is a powerful antiseptic and can be used to treat cuts and wounds to prevent and treat infections when diluted with a carrier oil.
Anthelmintic – It is also used to kill skin parasites such as crabs or head lice and internal parasites such as worms in the intestines. It is also been used as a natural mosquito repellent.
Antitussive – Thyme is a successful herb to calm and suppress coughs.
Carminative – Thyme is thought to be good for colic, flatulence and other intestinal problems.
Expectorant – it thought to be beneficial for coughs and sore throat related to colds and flu as well as whooping cough. This is because the active constituents of thyme are known to loosen and expel mucous.
