Tincture made by a process of hydro-ethanolic percolation, with a ratio of 1 part Damiana Leaf to 4 parts liquid. Liquid comprises of 40% water and 60% sugar beet derived ethanol.
Turnera diffusa, known as damiana, is a shrub native to southern Texas in the United States, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean. It belongs to the family Passifloraceae.
Damiana is a relatively small, woody shrub that produces small, aromatic flowers. It blossoms in early to late summer and is followed by fruits that taste similar to figs. The shrub is said to have a strong spice-like odour somewhat like chamomile, due to the essential oils present in the plant.
Medicinal Action and Uses
Aphrodisiac – This herb is traditionally been used as an aphrodisiac. Modern research supports this use as well. It is shown to increase sperm count in males and the strength of eggs in females, help with erectile dysfunction and anorgasmia.
Diuretic – Damiana has both diuretic and antiseptic properties and has been used as an herbal treatment for urinary tract infections such as bladder and ureteral inflammation.
Laxative – Damiana has also been used traditionally to improve digestion and to treat constipation, as in larger doses it is thought to have a mild laxative effect.
Nervine – Damiana has anti depressant properties and helps to boost the overall mood and bring about a general feeling of well-being. Additionally, it has been used as an herbal remedy for anxiety and nervousness.
Stimulant – Chemical analysis shows that damiana contains alkaloids similar to caffeine that have stimulating and aphrodisiac effects. Some people report feelings of mild euphoria.
