Medicinal Action and Uses
Antispasmodic – Valerian relaxes muscles making it a useful treatment for abdominal cramps due to nervousness and for uterine cramps and menstrual agitation. It also helps relieve dysmenorrhoea and it can be of benefit in migraine and rheumatic pain.
Nervine – Due to the herbs sedative effects, it is used as a treatment for nervous anxiety and to help the body relax in the presence of pain.
Sleep Aid – Valerian root is mainly used as a herbal sleep aid. The plant has been shown to provide both improved sleep quality and longer sleep, without giving the “hangover” feeling in the morning like so many synthetic medications used to treat insomnia.
