Vitex agnus-castus, also called vitex, chaste tree, chasteberry, Abraham’s balm, lilac chastetree, or monk’s pepper, is a native of the Mediterranean region. The chaste tree is a flowering shrub that grows to a height of 1 to 5 meters.

Vitex agnus-castus is widely cultivated in warm temperate and subtropical regions for its delicate-textured aromatic foliage and butterfly attracting spikes of lavender flowers in late summer. It requires full sun or partial shade along with well-drained soil.

Medicinal Action and Uses

Anti-Aphrodisiac – Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) got its name from the anti aphrodisiac quality purported since its early use. It was given to Monks and Nuns to suppress sexual desires.

Dysmenorrhea – Its ability to regulate the hormone balance is also what makes the herb valuable in treating painful and irregular periods, menstrual cramps and PMS (premenstrual syndrome.)

Galactagogue – Vitex has also been used to increase stimulation of breast milk production.

Hormone Balancing – Vitex is a normalising herb for the female reproductive system, a regulator of the hormonal balance of estrogen and progesterone.  This makes it a common treatment for infertility and symptoms of menopause.
