Medicinal Action and Uses
Anti-Aphrodisiac – Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) got its name from the anti aphrodisiac quality purported since its early use. It was given to Monks and Nuns to suppress sexual desires.
Dysmenorrhea – Its ability to regulate the hormone balance is also what makes the herb valuable in treating painful and irregular periods, menstrual cramps and PMS (premenstrual syndrome.)
Galactagogue – Vitex has also been used to increase stimulation of breast milk production.
Hormone Balancing – Vitex is a normalising herb for the female reproductive system, a regulator of the hormonal balance of estrogen and progesterone. This makes it a common treatment for infertility and symptoms of menopause.
