Zanthoxylum clava-herculis (commonly called Hercules’ club, Hercules-club, pepperwood, or southern prickly ash) is a spiny tree or shrub native to the south-eastern United States. It grows to 10–17 m tall and has distinctive spined thick, corky lumps 2–3 cm long on the bark.

This species is quite widely used in herbal medicine, it has the same properties as Z. americanum, but is said to be more active. All parts of the plant, but especially the bark and roots, contain the aromatic bitter oil xanthoxylin. This has a number of applications in medicine.

Medicinal Action and Uses

Analgesic – Prickly ash bark is used most commonly to relieve chronic pain, and is often used as a poultice applied to the skin over the area of pain. It can be used to alleviate abdominal pain, particularly when the source of the pain is a parasitic infection.

Anti-parasitic – Traditional herbal medicine also uses prickly ash to kill parasites.

Antirheumatic – A tea or tincture of the bark has traditionally been used in the treatment of rheumatism.

Diaphoretic – The bark of the prickly ash is diaphoretic and is therefore used in the treatment of fevers and ague (malaria or another illness involving fever and shivering.)

Odontalgic –The pulverised root and bark are used to ease the pain of toothache, with it having a numbing effect.
