Description
Zea Mays, commonly known as Cornsilk, is the white and brown tipped tassels that surround an ear of corn.
Maize, also known as corn, is a cereal grain first domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico about 10,000 years ago. Maize has become a staple food in many parts of the world, with total production surpassing that of wheat or rice.
The maize plant is often 3m (10 ft) in height, though some natural strains can grow to 12m (39 ft).The stem is commonly composed of 20 internodes of 18 cm (7.1 in) length. Ears develop above a few of the leaves in the midsection of the plant, between the stem and leaf sheath, elongating by around 3 millimetres (0.12 in) per day, to a length of 18cm (7 in.) Elongated stigmas, called silks, emerge from the whorl of husk leaves at the end of the ear. They are often pale yellow and 18 cm (7 in) in length, like tufts of hair in appearance.
