Description

Ruta graveolens, commonly known as rue, common rue or herb-of-grace, is a species of Ruta, grown as an ornamental plant and herb. It is native to the Balkan Peninsula. It is now grown throughout the world in gardens, especially for its bluish leaves, and sometimes for its tolerance of hot and dry soil conditions.

It is also cultivated as a medicinal herb, as a condiment, and to a lesser extent as an insect repellent.

the use of Rue as a medicinal herb has declined in modern times due to it's toxicity, and the bitterness of its taste.

Medicinal Action and Uses

Analgesic - Used in small amounts rue can ease headaches, especially those caused by nervous tension. Historically, Rue has been used to relieve the pain associated with the physical symptoms of complaints such as gout, rheumatism, and sciatica.

Bitter - It is also used as a digestive tonic and to stimulate the appetite. The herb is edible and often used in salads.

Emmenagogue - Throughout the years of its use, rue has been used to promote menstruation.

Insect Repellent - Rue can be used as an insect repellent and to discourage slugs and beetles in the garden.
