Description

Salvia officinalis (sage, also called garden sage, common sage, or culinary sage) is a perennial, evergreen subshrub, with woody stems, greyish leaves, and blue to purplish flowers. It is a member of the mint family Lamiaceae and native to the Mediterranean region, though it has naturalised in many places throughout the world.

It has a long history of medicinal and culinary use, and in modern times as an ornamental garden plant.

The common name "sage" is also used for a number of related and unrelated species.

Garden sage (Salvia Officinalis) prospers in an alkaline soil in full sun. It is commonly found in dry banks and rocky soil.

 

Medicinal Action and Uses

Anti-Inflammatory - Sage tea can be applied topically or gargled for inflammations. Sage extract, tincture and essential oil are used in prepared medicines for oral and gastrointestinal  remedies.

Antispasmodic - Sage has an anti-spasmodic action which reduces tension in smooth muscle and can be used in steam inhalation for asthma attacks. It is an excellent remedy for relieving mucous congestion in the airways and helping prevent secondary infection.

Antiviral - Salvia officinalis has shown anti-fungal, antiviral and anti-bacterial properties that make it a useful weapon in combating many illnesses. Studies have shown it to be effective against candida albicans, herpes simplex virus II, and influenza virus II.

Cognitive - Sage is considered to have the ability to improve brain function and memory. Having used Sage oil, volunteers indicated improvements in word recall and speed of attention. It has shown some promise in clinical trials as an herbal remedy for Alzheimer’s Disease.

Carminative - This herb has shown great promise in aiding digestion and enhancing overall tone of the digestive tract. It may be taken as a carminative to reduce griping and other symptoms of indigestion, and is also of value in the treatment of dysmenorrhoea.

Skin Complaints - Sage is considered by many herbalists to be a useful medicinal herb for treating eczema,canker sores. This is mainly due to its Anti-inflammatory affects.
