Description

Botanical Name - Ziziphus jujuba

Chinese Name - DA ZAO

English Name - Sour Chinese Date (Fruit)

Ziziphus jujuba, commonly called jujube, red date, Chinese date, Korean date, or Indian dateis a species of Ziziphus in the buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae).

It is a small deciduous tree or shrub reaching a height of 5–12 metres, usually with thorny branches. Its precise natural distribution is uncertain due to extensive cultivation, but is thought to be in southern Asia, between Lebanon, northern India, and southern and central China, and possibly also south eastern Europe.

The freshly harvested, as well as the candied dried fruit, are often eaten as a snack. Smoked jujubes are consumed in Vietnam and are referred to as black jujubes. Both China and Korea produce a sweetened tea syrup containing jujube fruit in glass jars, and canned jujube tea or jujube tea in the form of teabags.

Medicinal Action and Uses

Circulatory - The fruit regulates the circulation. The jujube fruit is a rich source of both iron and phosphorous, which are key ingredients in the red blood cells. By increasing your iron and phosphorous intake with jujube fruit, you can increase blood flow, thereby oxygenating your organ systems more effectively.

Digestive - Jujube fruits are also linked to improving digestive processes within the body. This is mainly attributed to its fibre content.

Immunostimulant - Jujube is able to benefit the immune system in many different ways, namely due to its high antioxidant content, including vitamin C, vitamin A, and various organic compounds and acids.  These antioxidants are able to neutralize free radicals, which are responsible for many chronic diseases and illnesses within the body. The saponins and alkaloids found in jujube fruit have been directly linked with purifying the blood and eliminating harmful toxins from the body’s systems

Nervine - Jujube has been proven to have certain anxiolytic and soothing effects on the body. The fruit can have an impact on your hormonal levels and induce a calm, relaxed sensation through your mind and body.

Topical uses - Jujube juice and extract have been used topically to treat various skin irritations and inflammations, including psoriasis, eczema, and acne.
