Description

Botanical Name - Rheum palmatum

Chinese Name - DA HUANG

English Name - Turkey Rhubarb

Rheum palmatum is a species of flowering plant in the knotweed family Polygonaceae. It is commonly called Chinese rhubarb, ornamental rhubarb, Turkish rhubarb, Turkey rhubarb, Indian rhubarb, Russian rhubarb or rhubarb root (and within Chinese herbal medicine da-huang).

Rheum palmatum is a herbaceous perennial closely related to, and resembling, the edible rhubarb. It is primarily used in traditional medicine, and as an ornamental subject in the garden.

Though native in the regions of western China, northern Tibet, and the Mongolian Plateau, Chinese Rhubarb was widely used in other parts of the world.

Medicinal Action and Uses

Diuretic - herbalists recommended rhubarb as a diuretic and to treat kidney stones, gout, and liver diseases characterized by jaundice.

Gastrointestinal - Rhubarb is used primarily for digestive complaints including constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, and preparation for certain gastrointestinal diagnostic procedures.

Purgative- The roots contain anthraquinones, which have a purgative effect.

Skin Conditions - Externally Rheum palmatum is used to heal skin sores and scab, this is due to it having antiseptic and astringent properties.
